About our Visual Arts project

The Visual Arts project supports people living with mental illness or dementia to take part in creative activities. Each session has a friendly atmosphere where participants can try painting, sculpture, weaving, mask-making, or other craft skills. All work is flexible and adapted to different abilities. The group is led by experienced artists who help everyone join in, focus on self-expression, and build new skills without pressure.

What do people do in a Visual Arts session?

You can try painting, sculpture, collage, mask-making, costume design, and other types of craft. The group chooses projects together. Some sessions might work towards a group display or event.

Do I need any art experience?

No. You do not need to have any experience. The project is open to complete beginners or those with some creative background. Just bring yourself.

Who leads the sessions?

Experienced facilitators run the sessions. They understand how to support adults living with mental illness, dementia, or who need more support in groups.

Is the space accessible?

Yes. We run groups in accessible venues, including large tables and seating. We support those with limited mobility or communication.

Can I come and watch or do something simple?

Yes. You can work at your own pace. Some people just colour or watch for their first sessions. You choose how and when to get involved.

Who this project is best suited for

The Visual Arts project is for adults who want to try art in a group setting. It is designed for people who may find other art groups too busy, stressful, or judgemental. Referrals come from health professionals, carers, charities, and local support workers. People who are anxious or shy in groups are welcome. The space is suitable for those with limited movement, dementia, or mental health needs. If someone wants to create in a safe group, this is a good choice. The project welcomes those who want creative time and a sense of belonging.
